Aston Martin Racing’s DBR9 Triumphs in UK Debut

Aston Martin Racing have secured a second consecutive victory after the team’s brace of DBR9s took 1st and 2nd in front of a jubilant home crowd at Silverstone.

Car 29, driven by Peter Kox and Pedro Lamy took victory and the RAC Tourist Trophy, just ahead of team mates David Brabham and Darren Turner who guided car 28 to a 2nd place finish.
A delighted Pedro Lamy, who took the chequered flag said: “It’s always good to win at Silverstone – it’s special.

The team did a fantastic job – they are always good, but today especially. They made the difference – there wasn’t much between us and our competitors in pace out there.”

Co-driver, Peter Kox was equally enthusiastic: “Obviously we’re delighted with the win. Our pace was good, but it was the pit stops that made the real difference. It’s great for Aston Martin to get such a result on home soil.”

Aston Martin Racing Team Principal, George Howard-Chappell added: “This is a great result for the team – they gave us the edge and a 1st and 2nd place finish is a fitting reward for their efforts.”

The DBR9 pairing had secured the front row of the grid in Saturday’s qualifying sessions with Darren Turner starting strongly and maintaining the lead whilst Pedro Lamy recovered to 4th place after a frenetic start saw car 29 forced down the order.

Immaculate pit stops for both cars at the hour mark allowed David Brabham (car 28) and Peter Kox (car 29) to take the wheel and emerge in 1st and 2nd place respectively.

By the halfway point both DBR9s managed to hold off intense competition to maintain a leading Aston Martin formation.

With just under an hour remaining, both cars pitted for the final time with Darren Turner taking the wheel in car 28 and Pedro Lamy taking over in car 29 to complete the final stint.

As the race entered the final 15 minutes, Darren Turner, aware that car 29 was running slightly faster, allowed team mate Pedro Lamy to pass into first place.

Darren commented: “The Maserati’s were closing and it was important to keep the 1st and 2nd for the team The rear tyres on our car wore slightly harder in the final stint, car 29 was running faster, so I let Pedro pass.”

David Brabham added: “First Sebring and now here. This is another excellent result for Aston Martin Racing.”

Silverstone victory marks Aston Martin’s fourth RAC Tourist Trophy win, the first since 1959.
